Gadgets……………….Got pocket PC, laptop, CDMA
cell phone (substitution of home phone, to connect to internet), new GSM cell
phone (walkman, camera, MMS, e-mails, with 512 memory card), digital camera
(plan to buy a new one ‘cos I gave the old one to my sis), flash disk, mini
external harddisk, etc.
Hmm……..I’d never thought that I would own those stuffs. But now, it’s like
a need, number one needs. Can’t do anything without them.
CELL PHONE
It’s funny to think that I was the last person in my college gang to have a
cell phone.
I had to buy my first cell phone in 2000, when my mom got hospitalized and I
needed to check her condition from time to time with my little sis who took
care of her. Up to now, this is my 7th cell phones.
My first one was Siemens M-135. Some pickpocket took it from my sis back pack
when she was on bus, on her way to go home. So I bought Samsung SGH N620. Lent
it to my dad, and I bought second hand Nokia 3200. Sold it after my dad came
back.
Bought Nokia 3530, gave Samsung to my dad. That Nokia got snatched from my
backpack while I was taking my wudhu in mushollah. Can u imagine that! A thief
near mushollah.
Bought Nokia 6110, it turned out that the key pad had some problems after
sometime. Then I traded it with Nokia 3660 in March 2004. I thought I won’t
change cell phones for a long time. Because it has many features I needed:
camera, MMS, blue tooth and infra red connection, memory for saving my pictures
and sounds and SMS, e-mail, I even can logon to messenger via my cell with a software
installed (Agile Messenger).
- With the camera, I’m able to capture certain moments.
- With MMS, I receive many pictures of my baby niece from my sis. So I’d know
how she’s doing.
- With e-mail feature, I can check that the e-mail I’ve been waiting for has
been received.
- When I get bored while waiting in the airport or waiting for my clients, I
can log on to Yahoo/MSN messenger and chat with my buddies.
Then, on Dec 2005, something happened with the cell. I could not use my Agile
Messenger. Tried to installed it several times, but I still could not log on.
Someday, I put it inside my small pouch together with my Pocket PC. When I
stood up, the pouch slipped from my lap and it was dropped. My Nokia could not
perform the vibrate mode once awhile. I can tolerate that. What happened next
was, I could not add recipient to my text message. That bothered me! I went to
Nokia Car Center, the customer service told me that I had to upgrade phone
software, when they do that I will loose all the data inside. Gosh, what to
do???
So I decided to buy SE W800i because it has walkman. I wanted to buy iPod, but
now I don’t have to buy it. Now, I’m still working on data moving, from old
cell to new cell. Takes time though. I had to use infrared and bluetooth connection. After done, I’ll send it to Nokia Center,
have it upgraded and give it to my sis.
CDMA Mobile Phone
Here’s another story about mobile
phone. In my rented house, I don’t have landline phone (Telkom). So I bought
CDMA phone and a CDMA number, as they have a promotion of special low rate!!!!
I bought pre-paid number, and then
shifted it to post-paid service so I can get the internet connection at home
and during my travelling. My first CDMA phone was Nokia 6106, but a pickpocket
took it from me on the bus (read my blog).
Later on, I bought Nokia 2115 and
still using it.
LAPTOP
Decided to buy NEC Versa E680 in July
2004.
In my job, I need to access data
fast: quotations, product spec and configuration, price calculations, e-mails,
etc.
Number of computers in my office was
not adequate to provide for so many staffs. So I bought it for my work sake,
but it’s also useful for my personal use.
Problem I had was spyware. I got the
attack when I was in Kun Ming 2005. I could not log in to internet in the hotel
after 3 days. My files and the display went berserk. I lost my training
materials!!!!! When I got back to Jakarta, I asked the computer store to reformat
my laptop. I haven’t had time to do a back-up and also didn’t have place for
the back-up data. The computer store did the back-up, but what happened was
when they copy the data back to my laptop, I found that there were many files
that they have missed!!! DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of my pictures and my work
files!!!!!!!!!!!! Imagine that!
I got angry, I had made several folders
and told them that those were the files needed to be backed up! But they copied
not based on the folders, they copied the files in a way that can fit the space
in each CD! I told them I’d pay for the CD if they didn’t want to provide CDs.
After I learned my lesson, I always
back up my files regularly and installed anti-spyware software and update it
regularly too.
Well, so far I have reformatted my
laptop 4-5 times because of some errors. Last one, I lost my e-mails from
period of October 2005-March 2006 during back up process. That was the worst
thing!!!! Those were important correspondence!
The laptop was dropped twice
accidentally (of course, who wanted to drop their own laptop purposely!!!!). First,
when I was with Veronica to have a presentation to Erha Clinic Workshop in end
of 2004. The bag holder just snapped! Last time, was on March 2006 when I was
in Ciledug, I tripped on the cable. The monitor was blinking. I thought: please
God! Make it work, make it work. It’s still working, but the keyboard is not
flat anymore. Another lesson!
DIGITAL CAMERA
Bought a digicam before going to 2004 Integra training. A simple digicam: Samsung Digimax 301. I’m
still using it. It’s not bad.
Thinking to
buy new one with optical zoom , smaller and slimmer size, and bigger memory
card.
Maybe
later, when I have the money.
POCKET PCA a.k.a PDA
At the beginning of the year, company
will distribute an agenda/diary to the staffs so we can write down our
appointments and work progress.
Well, I don’t like it, cos I have to
turn back the pages to look for a specific matter, and I had separate note for
my clients’ contact numbers.
I bought HP Pocket PC iPaq h2210 in
January 2005 as the diary replacement. Gathered all my clients’ contact numbers and
infos. Entered my appointments with alarm. Put the files I wanted to work on,
saved PPT files to be shown to clients. Nice! Most importantly, I have
pocket Qur’an inside.
To be honest I didn’t use it to the
optimal utilization, only for basic stuffs. I have never used it to play games
or to listen to MP3.
